hello, spring

Welcome to the first day of spring!

Everyone in Virginia tells me this was one of the coldest, longest winters in recent history. Seems like that’s true for a lot of the country. While my family enjoyed all the wonders of our first snowfall and bundling in new scarves, we’re more than anxious for the return of warm weather.

A new season is a great reason for fresh mantel decor! Dressing up our ledge might be my new creative outlet, but I’ve set some ground rules. Namely, a $20 budget. It’s easy to put together gorgeous decor when you’ve got unlimited funds. But, I find it more adventurous (and thrifty) to “shop” my home for things I can reuse, repurpose, or make from scratch.

In case you missed it, the paper feather garland tutorial can be found here.

Hydrangea blues and sunny yellows having me dreaming of spring breezes, even though it’s been raining non-stop here.

I took this photo while sailing in the British Virgin Islands with Handsome after college. Love their cheerful exterior color schemes.

We made the mistake of buying Bug a kite this winter. A kite in the winter, you say? Well, it’s a fighter jet kite we brought home from our DC vacation. Of course he wanted to fly it immediately – in the snow. So, my spring mantel has a subtle flight theme because spring will bring better kite-flying weather.

dollar store candle holders

I love a good deal. Especially a good deal that’s easy.

Glass vessels are multi-functional decor must-haves. They can be used for candles, yes, but also look great topped with seasonal do-dads – think seashells, pinecones, fall leaves, flowers, and such.

Make your own by picking up these candlesticks and glass vases at your local dollar store.

E6000 is my new bestie. Industrial strength craft adhesive that’s ideal for bonding wood, fabric, leather, ceramic, glass, metal. Non-acidic for photographs and also washer/dryer safe. Dries crystal clear, non-flammable, waterproof and paintable. Seriously, what more could you ask from a glue?!

Run a bead around the candlestick edge.

Center the candlestick on the bottom of the vase and let set overnight.

No one will believe they only cost you $2 each!

Typically you’d fill them half up with rocks, beads, sand, etc, and place votive candles inside. But this month I put a little gold duck tape around the lip and will be employing them in my St. Patty’s Day mantle decor. Stay tuned to see it all come together!

washi tape door decor

Washi Tape the Door Edge

Bug and Songbird’s rooms are still white. They look the same as the day we moved in, more or less. I would rather wait to pull a room design together in it’s entirety than slap something up on the walls just because. But patterned washi tape along the bedroom door edge adds a little hidden pop of color and fun!

If you’re unfamiliar, washi tape is similar to masking tape. Translucent and non-permanent, but strong enough to stay put. Scotch Expressions masking tape is what I used for the doors. You can find it at Target, Staples, and from lots of online vendors.
