leprechaun fun

Songbird awoke this morning to find her leprechaun trap had been sabotaged! Who knew leprechauns carried scissors…

We had had several staring contests in the last few days, so she could prep to hold a leprechaun’s gaze. Although Songbird was disappointed to not have won the ultimate golden prize, she was delighted to find the leprechaun left something inside the trap for her.

A ring made just her size out of a 5-dollar-bill. How did he know that she’s five?!

He must have gotten spooked and dashed off in a hurry because he left his bike behind.

The little trickster tried to escape through Bug’s room, but his trusty fighter jet was grounded due to mechanical issues.

Abandoning his aircraft, he trekked by foot into the bathroom, leaving shamrock graffiti on the mirror.

We aren’t sure how he made it downstairs or managed to open the fridge door, but we’re pretty positive he’s responsible for turning the milk green.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!

* bike was fashioned with buttons and florist wire, dollar ring tutorial found here, fighter jet tutorial found here, footprints are washable paint on doll shoes, “pinch proof” shirt made with freezer paper, and food coloring accomplished the rest…

to catch a leprechaun

Give this girl some craft supplies and she comes up with the the best ideas. (no clue where she gets that from) She learned in preschool that if you catch a leprechaun and stare him straight in the eyes, he HAS to tell you where he’s hidden his pot of gold.

So naturally this led to the building of a leprechaun trap. After I spray painted an oatmeal container and toilet paper rolls, she was in business. Songbird figures that since they like gold and rainbows, this was an appropriate starting point. Then she added various green gems and what-nots, completed with a booby trapped door.

Now it sits on her nightstand, the string just long enough to hold from bed.

This is how I found her at 9pm last night. She sleeps like a rock, so I was able to turn on the light and snap a quick photo.

I know that some parents are against encouraging the belief in holiday fictional characters and I understand many of their reasons why.

Personally, I see no harm in cultivating my kids’ imaginations this way; letting them believe in the impossible. After all, walking on the moon, flying across the ocean, and seeing inside a living human body were at one time considered impossible too. Someday soon she will denounce the idea of leprechauns and the magic of childhood will fade. But my hope is that her creative, dreaming spirit thrives.

And, who knows, maybe she’ll catch one…

The day o’ luck and all things green is just a week away! And I finally got my mantel all dolled up for the occasion. Please avert your eyes from the big black void of a TV that dominates the space.

Handsome’s family origins are tied to Scotland and mine are mostly English, but you never know…

I designed this poster because, while the idea of luck is fun, the reality of God granting us His favor is so much more powerful. If you’d like to print an 8×10 copy for your own home, you can do that HERE.

From the fullness of His grace, we have all received one blessing after another.  John 1:16

paper 4-leaf clovers

According to Wikipedia, “shamrock” and “four-leaf clover” are not interchangeable terms. Shamrocks are the three-leaf variety most famous as a symbol of Ireland. The four-leaf clover, however, has a worldwide reputation for being lucky. Probably because for every 1 four-leaf clover, there are 10,000 three-leafers.

Tradition states that each leaf represents something: the first is for faith, the second is for hope, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck. Hmm, now where have I heard that before…

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13

If you don’t have time to go searching through 10,000 clovers, then make your own luck! A few sheets of scrapbook paper, scissors, buttons and hot glue are all you need.
